Welcome to Surrey

The home county of Surrey is a landlocked and surrounded by the counties of Kent, Berkshire, East & West Sussex, Hampshire and Greater London.

Surrey has a population of around 1,200,000 people. The county town is Guildford, with other large towns at Woking, Walton-on-Thames, Ewell and Esher.

The North Downs are a prominent feature of the Surrey landscape, a county with a number of beauty spots, rural locations and wooded environments – Box Hill is the oldest untouched area of woodland in the UK.


History

Runnymede near Egham is famous for being the site where King John signed Magna Carta in the 13th century to bring to an end the hostilities with feuding barons. Wealth was created in the county through the wool and textile manufacturing industries.

The later 19th century saw Surrey become an important centre for the Arts & Craft movement, the county’s architecture having a significant influence not only in Britain but around the world. Industry, in the shape of paper and gunpowder manufacturing declined towards during the 19th century, though the county become a hub for engineering and the manufacture of aircraft.


Getting There

Surrey is easily accessible by road, being well served by the M3 and A3 which are both connected to the M25.

The county is well served by train with frequent trains on the mainline from London Waterloo and a host of regional services.

Visitors from further afield can use the airports at Heathrow and Gatwick.
