History

Buckinghamshire has a rich and varied history dating from Celtic and Roman times and many historic features can be found across the county.

Buckinghamshire’s coat of arms features swans – which relates to a time when swans were symbols of status under royal patronage. At one time The Chiltern Forest covered a significant portion of the county, though the native trees were heavily harvested to support the chair making industry of the 18th century which was centred on High Wycombe.

Today the county is home to agriculture, country estates and a thriving services industry. The prime minister’s private home – Chequers is also in the county.

Getting There

Buckinghamshire is very accessible by road with the M40, M25, and M1 and among the major roads running through the county.

The county is well served by train with numerous links to London’s principal stations, reflecting the county’s commuter belt status.
Visitors from further afield can use the Heathrow airport and other major airports given the road network.
