The Royal oak is a late 15th century inn. Where the pool room is now it used to be a butchers and the abattoir was out the back of the pub. The pub has a historic connection to the Chelsea Pensioners. Prior to moving to become landlord at the Royal Oak Glyn Evans ran a pub in Chelsea and some of the Chelsea Pensioners regularly visited Laxfield. The painting on the wall depicts Sgt Tommy Battle talking to the ghost of Charles II, founder of the Royal Hospital in Chelsea.
