The Food Museum Stowmarket | Suffolk
Food Museum
We have 75 acres of Suffolk countryside, 40,000 objects and 17 buildings for you to explore, plus activities every day. Come and enjoy!
We are the UK’s Food Museum, located in East Anglia, ‘Britain’s Breadbasket’. Our mission is to connect people with where our food comes from and the impact of our choices: past, present and future.
Food is culture and is an avenue for everyday creativity. Our collection is rooted in East Anglia and we use it to tell broad and inclusive stories.
From cheese-making to brewing, historic bread to seasonal eating, we are here to engage audiences with the heritage of food and the communities who grow and make it. We aim to explore themes connected by food – social, historical, technological, industrial, and environmental – and to give visitors hands-on experiences which bring processes alive, teach skills and share memories.
What’s here.
Highlights of a visit include Abbot’s Hall, a Queen Anne house, which is original to the site. The Hall has our community exhibition galleries.
Further, through our site, you’ll find the Boby Building, housing crafts and tools used in the production of food, a blacksmith’s forge, and our Farm Barn which explores who grows our food. The Bone building is currently being refurbished and soon will house a programme of changing annual exhibitions.
Our farm grows rare breeds, growing crops and an orchard. Further along is Alton Watermill, Great Moulton Chapel and Eastbridge Windpump and a mile of beautiful river trails.
You’re sure to work up a thirst touring the museum so stop off for a cup of tea at the Café.
A highlight is a guided tour of the Dairy Cottages at Crowe Street which takes place twice a week or by special arrangement.
