Gilbert White’s House & Gardens in Hampshire
Gilbert White & The Oates Collections explores the lives of 19th-century explorer Frank Oates, and Captain Lawrence Oates who travelled with Scott on the ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition.
Gilbert White’s House
Home of the pioneering naturalist Gilbert White, ‘The Wakes’ (named after the Wake family who had lived here previously), the rooms have been restored following descriptions in White’s correspondence and include a chair he used at Oriel College, Oxford (loaned from the College), items of contemporary furniture, family portraits and bed hangings embroidered for him by his aunts.
Gilbert White’s Garden
Historic features of the garden that can still be seen include the original Haha, Sundial and Fruit Wall as well as the Great Oak planted in 1730. Much of the garden has been recreated using the notes Gilbert White kept in his ‘Garden Kalendar’.
