The Lamarsh Lion is a wonderful traditional country pub serving cask ales, wines and delicious home cooked meals. Built in the 14th Century and located on the Essex / Suffolk border, the pub is now owned by the local community and sits in the idyllic Essex countryside.
Famous for its connections with two iconic painters John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough, giving it the nickname “The Painters’ Pub”.
John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough painted in Lamarsh and both are reputed to have frequented the Lamarsh Lion Copies of Constable’s Lamarsh House and Gainsborough’s Lamarsh Cliff – Landscape looking towards Cornard, now hang in the bar. It is believed that Lamarsh, almost unknown to the outside world, is the only village in which both of these world-renowned artists painted.
